L’inabastable perfil – Homenatge E. Chillida (The unattainable profile – Homage to E. Chillida)

Programme note
The unattainable profile is based on the reading of the reflections included in Eduardo Chillida’s personal notes, and more precisely of the phrase “the unattainable profile of the branch moved by the wind”. The image of this profile on the wind, seen as an horizon, as a moving space between the palpable and impalpable, contains and synthesizes a great part of E. Chillida’s thoughts and ideas.
The ascending and insistent impulse at the beginning of the piece is located with insistence to the listener in the upper register in order to transmit the feeling of distance about an unattainable reality. The use of plentiful violin harmonics, piano-pianissimo dynamics, a little soft-oscillating motif and fine fluctuations in the cadencial movement pretend to create a transparent and graceful texture, which reminds the ephemeral profile of “the branch moved by the wind”.
The repeated-note motif is developed in the brief section culminating in the unison between piano and violin (middle D note on the piano), which comes from the peace and quietness maintained until the end of the work. From these two instruments- union, will be born a last and slow ascension in the violin, and a descending impulse into the deep grave register on the piano, unexplored up to now.
