This work was already the fruit of the contemplation of nature in autumn. It consists of eight short pieces that serve as images or observations, with leaves servingas the central theme, as the guiding thread.
It is titled “Allegories” because of the desire to express or suggest something that goes a little beyond the descriptive fact and, at the same time, invites a deeper exploration of what surrounds us. Despite the contrasts between the parts, it is music that tends towards the static, music without a closure that keeps everything in suspense.
One of the unifying motifs is the descending chromatic interval– expressed by the notes B-A#. It is more or less in evidence in all the pieces, although especially in the last one; it is a motif that aims to evoke the feeling of something lost that usually surfaces in autumn and that nature expresses in this beautiful way.
The images taken as a starting point for these Autumn Allegories are as follows: the scattered movement of leaves with their tendency to gently float to the ground,in “Fulles I” (Leaves I); the coldest weather, so silent, with the incisive turning point of the first frost, in “Glaç” (Ice); the power of the earth in contrast to the mild smell of damp earth, in “Terra humida”(Damp Earth); gusts of wind wafting a pile of leaves, where the motif from “Fulles I” (Leaves I) is developed into “Fulles II” (Leaves II); the sad song of a bird in “Ocell solitary” (Lonely Bird); the superposition of two layers of dark clouds, in “Gris sobre gris”(Grey on Grey); and the colours of leaves with afirst call for attention and final sense of internal well-beingin “Fulles III” (Leaves III). The purpose of the closing allegory —which is untitled— is to focus on what is present in everything; emphasis is placed on the generating motif of the descending second, which here takes on a ceremonial character and is intended to express a certain sanctity. It contains a small camouflaged tribute to J. S. Bach and R. Schumann, from whom the enigmatic title with the three asterisks has also been taken.
This work demands a great deal of the performer due to the convergence of various difficulties, such as the brevityof each piece, the great variety of piano techniques, the subtlety and delicacy of timbre, the broad dynamic range, the use of the three pedals and the wide compass of the music.
Autumn Allegories – Microludes for piano, written in the fall of 2010, was dedicated to the pianist and dear friend MiquelVillalba, with deep gratitude.
